Presente Progressivo - The Present Progressive Tense

Presente Progressivo - The present progressive tense in Italian is called “presente progressivo.” It is used to describe an action taking place in the here and now. “What are you doing?” “I am reading a book.” In Italian: “Cosa stai facendo?” “Sto leggendo un libro.” “Stai” and “sto” are both present tense (presente in italiano) conjugations of the Italian verb “stare”. “Facendo” and “leggendo” are what is called the gerund (in English) or il gerundio (in italiano). Those two components: the appropriate conjugation of stare, plus the gerund, make up the presente progressivo tense.

Note that there is a subtle but technical difference: “What are you doing today?” “Today I’m studying Italian,” In Italian: “Cosa fai oggi?” “Oggi studio italiano”. Or “Are you taking a walk today?” “I walk every day.” Again, in Italian: “Oggi fai una passeggiata?” “Cammino ogni giorno.” These examples show verbs used in present tense to describe actions occurring in the present, but not actually in the here and now.

Io sto mangiando una pizza deliziosa.
 (I am eating a delicious pizza.)

Tu stai leggendo un libro interessante.

 (They are coming to the party tonight.)

Contructing the Presente Progressivo - The two parts of presente progressivo are simple. First, the appropriate conjugation of the Italian verb “stare” - to stay. The English equivalent in this context is “I am,” even though the Italian verb ‘stare’ means ‘to stay’.

Easy. One auxiliary verb, no deciding between avere and essere as in passato prossimo, for example. Memorize the presente conjugations of stare

Convert the action verb into the gerundio - The second half of the presente progressivo is the gerundio, gerund in English. If the equivalent in English (not translation) of stare is ‘I am’, the gerund is the verb that goes with it: walking, talking, leaving, doing or making… camminando, parlando, partendo, facendo.

-are verbs - For regular verbs ending in -are, the ending is dropped and replaced with -ando, as in the table below:

Irregular verbs - The best way to learn the gerundio of Italian irregular verbs is through repetition, exposure during reading, listening, writing, and speaking, and rote memorization.

The presente progressivo is a simple tense to construct and to use. There are only two conjugations, -are conjugations and -ere/-ire, which are conjugated alike. The only wrinkle, is knowing how irregular verb roots are, or as is the case with ‘andare,’ knowing that they are not modified in this tense.

One final note, when using the gerundio in presente progressivo with reflexive verbs, or verbi reflessivi, don’t forget to include the appropriate reflexive pronouns, in italiano: pronomi reflessivi.
